Pregnancy & Infertility

Fertility (the ability to get pregnant) declines with age. Infertility is present in about 10% of couples in the US. Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after 6-12 months of sex without the use of birth control. There are many different causes of infertility. The cause is related to females in 65% of couples, males in 20% of couples and no cause is found in 15% of couples. Some causes of infertility are easily treated and others are not.

Testing for infertility involves physical exam, medical history (male and female), evaluation of semen, evaluation of ovulation and possibly ultrasound. More invasive testing can include x-rays or surgery to evaluate the uterus and fallopian tubes. Workup is often tailored to your specific situation. Evaluation for infertility can be started by your physician at Women’s Clinic. We also offer limited treatment of infertility. If specialized treatment is required we will refer you to the appropriate clinic.

Unfortunately many medical insurance coverage plans do not include evaluation and workup for infertility. Be sure to check with your insurance plan to see what is or is not included.
