About 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. Mammography is an x-ray technique used to screen the breast for cancer. Annual screening mammography is recommended starting at the age of 40. If you have certain risk factors, your clinician may recommend beginning screening mammography at an earlier age. If an abnormality is found, additional special mammographic images and/or ultrasound may be required to further evaluate one or both breasts. Most lumps found are benign – not cancer. In addition to mammography a clinical breast exam is recommended by your clinician once a year. Your clinician can also explain self breast exams at your next clinic visit.
