Pelvic Floor Surgery

Pelvic organ prolapse is a condition which is caused by weakening of the muscles, ligaments, and other supporting structures of the lower abdomen and pelvis. Some women may notice a bulge in the vaginal walls, or feel a heaviness in their pelvic area. Pelvic organ prolapse can involve the bladder, uterus, vaginal walls, or bowel. This can impact urination, bowel movements, sexual intercourse, and other activities of daily living.

Treatment for pelvic floor dysfunction tends to be related to the symptoms that a woman is experiencing. Conservative measures include pelvic floor exercises, estrogen therapy, or the use of a pessary. A pessary is a removable, silicone device that is placed into the vagina to support the pelvic organs. Surgical therapy is also an option for symptomatic women. A variety of surgical procedures exist for prolapse. These include vaginal and abdominal approaches, and those procedures with and without the use of mesh grafts.
