Pelvic Pain

Pelvic pain refers to pain below the belly button. It can be acute (new pain) or chronic (pain present for more than 6 months). There are many causes of both acute and chronic pain. Common gynecologic causes of pain include ovarian cysts, endometriosis, pelvic infection, and fibroids. Pelvic pain may also be related to problems involving the bowel or bladder.

An evaluation for pelvic pain will start with a detailed history followed by a physical exam. Other tests may be ordered such as an ultrasound. In some cases surgery may be recommended.
