Sarah Alsager had a routine pregnancy. “Boring” is actually how she describes it. But there was nothing boring about her baby’s entrance into the world last September.

As she and her husband, Matt, were preparing for the delivery of their first child at St. Mary’s Health Center, intensifying contractions indicated that Theodore Dennis would be joining them soon. Then suddenly, the fetal monitor showed the baby’s heart rate dropping.

Sarah’s obstetrician, Dr. Amanda Rodemann, acted immediately to stabilize the heart rate. But then it dropped again, this time lower, and Dr. Rodemann announced it was time to get the baby out.

Sarah recalls it clearly: “People started flooding into the room. Matt and I were obviously a little anxious about what was going to happen next. But even though it seemed chaotic and scary, I felt this incredible sense of calmness. Part of it was my guardian angel watching over me, but the other part was that I had so much confidence in Dr. Rodemann to take care of me and to take care of Theo.”

Over the prior months, the couple had developed a special bond with the physician. “What we really appreciated was that she was so easy to talk to, and she answered any questions we had,” Sarah says. “It was refreshing to have someone who you felt really comfortable with, especially when you know that person is going to be bringing your child into the world.”

Within minutes, Theo was delivered by emergency C-section into his parents’ arms. Assisting during the delivery was Dr. Jodi Berendzen. “That’s one of the great things about working with the Women’s Clinic of JCMG,” Sarah notes. “You have a team of doctors who can be there for you.”

Over the next few days at St. Mary’s, the baby with the curly blonde hair got acquainted with his parents, and with the help of the nurses and lactation consultant, came to appreciate mom’s milk.

“The nurses at St. Mary’s were incredible,” Sarah says. “They took such good care of me. They were good about keeping me informed and being respectful of the things we wanted.” Right down to the extra pillows.
